The six that return more than they cost
One. Reading the numbers. Four figures a month, plotted annually. Costs minutes and it is the only thing that detects gradual decline.

Two. Visual inspection, annually. Cracked modules, discoloured cells, loose mounting, damaged cabling, vegetation growth. A walk with a camera finds things no dashboard reports.
Three. Thermographic inspection, periodically. Hot spots reveal failing cells, poor connections and bypass diode faults before they become losses large enough to notice in production data.
Four. Connection checks. Torque on DC connections, inspection of junction boxes. Loose connections are a fire risk and a resistive loss, and they are found by looking.
Five. Inverter housekeeping. Filters, fans, firmware. Manufacturer schedules exist and are frequently ignored until the unit fails.
And six. Vegetation and access, on ground mount. Growth is a shading loss that compounds silently — and it is not degradation, whatever the production chart suggests.
The three that frequently do not pay
Frequent cleaning in a rainy climate. Rainfall removes much of the soiling, and a cleaning contract in a wet region can cost more than the yield it recovers. Measure first: if performance ratio does not recover after a clean, soiling was not the problem.
Continuous professional monitoring on a small plant, where the subscription exceeds the value of the faults it would catch earlier than an annual review.
And preventive replacement of components that are not failing, absent a known defect pattern.
Each of these can be right at scale and wrong on a small installation, which is why the calculation matters more than the practice.
What a maintenance contract should specify
What is inspected and how often, itemised.
Response times for faults, which is where availability assumptions meet reality — a 99% assumption implies somebody arrives quickly.
Whether cleaning is included and at what frequency.
Who holds the monitoring credentials, and what happens at the end of the term.
And whether the contract is a condition of any guarantee. It frequently is, and a lapse then has two consequences rather than one.
The obligations you already have
Worth listing, because they arrive attached to documents signed at purchase.
Cleaning at a stated frequency, where a guarantee assumes it.
Maintaining monitoring, where a guarantee requires evidence.
Keeping records, because a claim needs evidence gathered while current.
And not modifying the installation without agreement, which voids more warranties than anything else.
The realistic annual routine
For a commercial plant, once a year plus monthly numbers.
Monthly: production, irradiance, performance ratio, availability, into a spreadsheet outside the monitoring platform.
Annually: visual inspection, connection checks, inverter service per the manufacturer, and a plot of the twelve monthly PR figures against the previous years.
That plot is the whole diagnostic. A flat line at design level is a healthy plant; anything else is a question with a date on it.
